Doyle Brunson Sets New Record on High Stakes Poker
November 30, 2007
This past week the television show High Stakes Poker took their series to a whole new level. The buy-in was raised to $500,000 and the pros came out to try their luck. Doyle Brunson was one of the pros and took home a record breaking $800,000 prize.
The hand to win the prize went like this: Brunson held the Ace and Ten of diamonds and raised up to $11,200. Four players decided to call, one of those players being Guy Laliberte billionaire of Cirque du Soleil. He had Ace and Five of hearts. Ace of clubs, Jack of spades and Four of diamonds were the flopped cards so Brunson bet $40,000 and was called by Laliberte.
The turn card was a Two of diamonds and Brunson bet again but this time it was much higher at $110,000. The announcer for the show stated that he did not think that Laliberte would call that big of a bet. Instead of calling he raised to $310,00 which almost put Brunson all in. Brunson decided to go all in pushing the bet now to $340,500. Of course Laliberte called and Brunson showed his hand.
Brunson was the favorite to win with 75% to win the hand and when Laliberte showed his hand the crowd was shocked. The river was turned but with no luck to Laliberte. With that Brunson took home a record breaking prize for the High Stake Poker show at $818,100. “When you don’t make a pair for eight hours, you go crazy,” Brunson said after the hand.
That record did not last long when just a short time later Patrik Antonius would beat Sam Farha for a pot of over $900,000. During their head to head action the river would be turned four times and Antonius would win three of them and won the top prize of almost $750,000.
Team PokerStars Signs Boris Becker
November 25, 2007
Team PokerStars has added another player to their long list of poker professionals. Except this time the new member is not a professional poker player. Boris Becker is the newest addition to Team PokerStars. Becker is known for being the youngest player to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon when he was just seventeen years old and won the tournament three times. He was born in 1967 in Germany but now resides in Switzerland.
Becker plans to participate in the upcoming European Poker Tour events that PokerStars sponsors and hopes to become a world-class poker player. “When I was still playing professional tennis, I started learning to play poker casually in between games because it helped me to improve my concentration,” Becker said through PokerStars’ website. “Now, I want to develop my poker skills and challenge myself to become really competitive at the highest levels in poker.”
PokerStars will be using the European Poker Tour and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour to expand their brand by having live, large buy-in televised events. Becker is used to being in the spotlight since 1985 so he will be at ease during filming. He has full celebrity status in the European market. He will also appear in a new TV advertising campaign for PokerStars.
The German Poker Open taking place January 29th-Feburary 2nd and the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo on April 12th-17th will be the first events that Becker will play in as a member of Team PokerStars. There are seven more events scheduled for the European Poker Tour and Becker will be seen at many if not all of them.
“Boris Becker is a world class sportsman who became famous for his competitive spirit and aggressive, entertaining playing style, so we’re delighted that he has become an ambassador for PokerStars,” Said Tamar Yaniv, Director, EMEA Marketing from PokerStars. “Thanks to his commitment to fighting for every point on court, he perfectly embodies the competitive spirit at the heart of all good poker players. And now PokerStars is giving their players who have always dreamed of facing Boris Becker at Wimbledon the opportunity to compete with him in Dortmund.”

The House Judiciary Committee Hears From Online Gambling Supporters
November 17, 2007
On November 14th the House Judiciary Committee heard from supporters and opponents on the legalization of online gambling.
The U.S. Department of Justice and other committee members spoke out about online gambling being a bad influence for society while the supporters argued that the Internet Gaming Enforcement Act violates World Trade Organization treaties and also seems to be slightly hypocritical concerning overseas wagering.
Joseph Weiler, of New York University’s Hauser Global Law School says, “The U.S. bans online gambling offered by overseas operators even though it made treaty commitments to allow it and even though it allows online wagering domestically, including for horse racing,” he told the committee. “We should bring our law and conduct into compliance with our international legal obligations. Our country is the trend setter and leader in so many international arenas. Whether we like it or not, we lead by example.”
Some feel that the US financial institutions are also acting as the ‘morality police’, Professional poker player Annie Duke told the House Judiciary Committee that, “What’s at stake here is the right of individual Americans to do what they want in the privacy of their homes without the intrusion of the government,” Duke told the committee. “This country was among the first to embrace the idea that there should be distinct limits on the ability of the government to control or direct the private affairs of its citizens. More than any other value, America is supposed to be about freedom. Except where one’s actions directly harm another person’s life, liberty, or property, our government is supposed to leave citizenry alone.”
Jeffery Sandman from the Safe and Secure Internet Initiative had this to say, “Instead of prohibiting Internet gambling, which is futile and denies Americans the freedom to decide whether to gamble online, the government should regulate and tax Internet gambling. Regulated Internet gambling would ensure proven and effective security controls are available to protect consumers and capture billions in revenue that is needed for critical government programs.”
So far nothing has changed, but neither side is ready to give up yet.

EU Trade Commissioner Asks U.S. to Reconsider Online Gambling
November 12, 2007
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) may have received a little boost from a summit meeting on Friday, November 9 in Washington D.C.
EU Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson and other European officials are hoping to achieve a political solution to the loss of the billions of dollars the EU online gaming industry has lost. Mandelson also lobbied congress to lift the ban for meetings on Capitol Hill, which includes a closed-door session with Barney Frank, the chairman of the House financial services committee.
Frank said on Friday that the involvement of the EU makes it a big ‘World Trade Organization (WTO’) issue and also says, “I would hope that some of the pro-trade people will be consistent in their view that the US must fulfill its WTO obligations,” and adds that, “I’m hoping to get support from three sources. Those who seek potential tax revenue, those who believe it is consistent with WTO obligations, and my main motivation, let people gamble if they want to.”
Nao Matsukata, formerly of US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said, “His (Mandelson’s) willingness to meet Barney Frank suggests that he is open to finding a legislative solution to the problem. The meeting on Friday initiated a mutually supportive effort to resolve the unfortunate decisions of the United States to withdraw from its GATS commitments, and should help create positive momentum for the Frank legislation on Capitol Hill.”
Frank’s proposal faces some major opponents such as the NFL because it would legalize online sports betting.
Massachusetts Trying to Sneak In Online Gambling Ban
November 9, 2007
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has been pushing his proposal for legalizing resort style, land-based casinos in Massachusetts, his proposal is 28 pages long. He has had some opposition because many believe his financial outlook for 20,000 jobs and $2 billion revenue is not realistic. But there are more reasons to take a closer look at his proposed bill.
The PPA (Poker Players Alliance) is questioning his proposal because hidden deep in the 28 page bill is a questionable, hypocritical clause banning online gambling.
His clause in the “Act Establishing and Regulating Resort Casinos in the Commonwealth” says, “Any person who knowingly transmits or receives a wager of any type by any telecommunication device, including telephone, cellular phone, Internet, local area network, including wireless local networks, or any other similar device or equipment or other medium of communication, or knowingly installs or maintains said device or equipment for the transmission or receipt of wagering information shall be punished by imprisonment in a house of correction for not more than 2 years, or a fine of not more than $25 000, or both.”
The PPA is urging online gamblers in Massachusetts to let there voices be heard and how they feel about this buried clause by contacting their state representatives.
