Doyle Brunson Sets New Record on High Stakes Poker
November 30, 2007
This past week the television show High Stakes Poker took their series to a whole new level. The buy-in was raised to $500,000 and the pros came out to try their luck. Doyle Brunson was one of the pros and took home a record breaking $800,000 prize.
The hand to win the prize went like this: Brunson held the Ace and Ten of diamonds and raised up to $11,200. Four players decided to call, one of those players being Guy Laliberte billionaire of Cirque du Soleil. He had Ace and Five of hearts. Ace of clubs, Jack of spades and Four of diamonds were the flopped cards so Brunson bet $40,000 and was called by Laliberte.
The turn card was a Two of diamonds and Brunson bet again but this time it was much higher at $110,000. The announcer for the show stated that he did not think that Laliberte would call that big of a bet. Instead of calling he raised to $310,00 which almost put Brunson all in. Brunson decided to go all in pushing the bet now to $340,500. Of course Laliberte called and Brunson showed his hand.
Brunson was the favorite to win with 75% to win the hand and when Laliberte showed his hand the crowd was shocked. The river was turned but with no luck to Laliberte. With that Brunson took home a record breaking prize for the High Stake Poker show at $818,100. “When you don’t make a pair for eight hours, you go crazy,” Brunson said after the hand.
That record did not last long when just a short time later Patrik Antonius would beat Sam Farha for a pot of over $900,000. During their head to head action the river would be turned four times and Antonius would win three of them and won the top prize of almost $750,000.
